Member Profile: Mira Inbar

Mira Inbar“There is a Native American saying,” says Mira Inbar, an MBA student at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business and Co-President of the Net Impact chapter there. “One cannot make a decision until he/she has sat at every point in the circle.” By the end of her time at Haas, Mira will have sat at nearly all the points in the circle, no matter what circle you are referring to.

Before deciding to pursue an MBA, Mira conducted ecology research in rainforests, worked on sustainability projects on the grassroots level with communities, on the policy front with the UN and national governments, and internationally with NGOs. After graduating with a degree in biology and environmental studies from Oberlin College, Mira took a volunteer position in the Peruvian Andes. For a number of years after that, she worked as a Program Manager at a nonprofit called Forest Trends.

“At Forest Trends,” she says. “I worked with NGOs governments, and companies to develop markets for carbon, biodiversity, and water services.” She also established “a global partnership with extractive companies to explore the use of ‘biodiversity offsets’ as a tool to manage their impacts on biodiversity.”

But her work in Peru and at Forest Trends felt constrained. “I always felt that my previous work was inhibited in its ability to achieve scale,” she says. “the private sector has incredible intellectual, financial, and human resources to put into solutions for environmental and social problems. I came to business school so that I could eventually push big corporations into sustainability-focused business development.”
