How Can Nonprofits Survive the Economic Crisis?

Uncharitable by Dan PallottaAs a leading expert on innovation in the nonprofit sector, Dan Pallotta has a lot to say about how nonprofits can survive in the current economic environment. In his most recent book, Uncharitable, Dan argues that society’s nonprofit ethic acts as a strict regulatory mechanism on the natural economic law. It creates an economic apartheid that denies the nonprofit sector critical tools and permissions that the for-profit sector is allowed to use without restraint.  These double-standards place the nonprofit sector at extreme disadvantage to the for-profit sector on every level.

Recently Net Impact had a chance to talk to Dan about his work with nonprofits and what advice he can share in these tough economic times:

Muhammad Ali said, "Shake up the world." That's my advice. The rulebook by which the culture expects the nonprofit sector to operate is screwed up. It's upside-down, dysfunctional, counterproductive, and a danger to human life...Too many nonprofits reinforce the old ways of thinking, and ridiculous metrics like overhead ratios, because they are rewarded for it...We have to remember, everyday, that this is not about improving the nonprofit sector. This is about saving human lives, helping AIDS orphans, finding a cure for breast cancer, ending human trafficking, massive suffering and all of the other things. These are causes worth fighting for a new paradigm.

What's Your Advice to Nonprofits?
Dan’s outspoken advice inspired Net Impact to craft a member challenge specifically for this topic. Starting today through April 29, Net Impact is asking our members to contribute their radical or practical ideas on how nonprofits can survive—and even thrive—in a recession. As our nonprofit members know, most of their organizations are experiencing a simultaneous increase in demand for services and decrease in available financial support. From new earned income plans to creative fundraising programs, all ideas are welcome in this important member challenge.
