Message from the Chapter President

September brings with it a sense of newness, a fresh start and the opportunity to launch into new adventures. The Net Impact Philadelphia Professionals Leadership Team is excited to embark upon a year of opportunities ahead. We look forward to expanding our activities and reach by enlisting the talent and resources of our dynamic group members – that means YOU! With your help, we know that our own expectations will prove to be mere shadows of what’s ahead.

The Leadership Team currently includes Mai-Linh Hoang, Vice President for Events; Christy Munding, Vice President for Outreach-Business and Community Relations; Kathryn Lee, Vice President for Marketing and Public Relations; and myself, Karyn Kemmerer, Chapter President. I’m truly honored to work amidst such a strong team! Yet, we have several open leadership positions and look forward to having new leaders to move us forward. (If you are interested in a leadership position, there is more information about the positions and selection process below.)

We are kicking off the fall by co-hosting a happy hour with Wharton to welcome new MBAs and professionals who are interested in getting involved with Net Impact. It’s a great opportunity for us to share stories of our summer, toast to new beginnings, and invite our friends and colleagues to mingle with a fun crowd of exceptional individuals. In November, the International Net Impact Conference is being hosted by Vanderbilt University in Nashville. We’d love for you all to go – I assure you it’s not only great fun, but also inspiring and an incredible opportunity to meet dynamic leaders from throughout the world.

It was recently announced that next year’s conference will be hosted in Philadelphia! As the host city of 1,500 conference participants there will be lots to do in the coming year and we welcome anyone who wants to help out. Christy Munding and I will be going to the 2007 conference so that we can use our observations and learning towards the 2008 conference. Please let us know if you are interested in going so that we can coordinate our involvements and expand what we learn.

Of course there is a lot more ahead, but we’ll wait for the new leadership team to determine the specifics.

Cheers,

Karyn

It’s not easy being green*…but then again, maybe it is!

Did you know that 20 million trees are cut down every year to publish new books! Don’t let this slow down your reading; instead help put nature back in balance by making a donation to Eco-Libris. Eco-Libris was created to balance out the paper in your books by planting trees. Through its website (www.ecolibris.net) you can counteract the negative impact of trees cut down to create the paper by donating $1 to plant a tree for every book you read. To maximize your impact, the trees are planted in developing countries to benefit both the environment and local communities.

If you’re not much of a reader, don’t let that stop you from contributing to Eco-Libris efforts. Eco-Libris doesn’t audit, so no need to worry about penalties for donating trees even if your shelves haven’t seen a new book since the fifth Harry Potter. In fact, next time you don’t know what to get your Uncle Bob for his birthday, consider a lovely grove for only $25. Or perhaps you want to plant a forest for your sweetheart with $100 donation, a great alternative to spending the same if not more for a bouquet of roses on Valentine’s Day.

Another way to be a green reader is to purchase used books (and save money too) or better yet borrow books from the library (it’s free!). The Free Library of Philadelphia was initiated by Dr. William Pepper in 1891 and by 1898 it had the largest circulation in the world, at 1,778,387 volumes. Today there are 54 library locations throughout Philadelphia. Wonder if Philly would ever consider adding a tag line to its name, “a book borrowed is a saved tree”?

Check out this map to find what Free Library location is most convenient for you: http://libwww.library.phila.gov/branches/branchmap.cfm

Chapter Leader Profile

Last month, Mary McNealy, the founding chapter president, moved to Portland, Oregon. Although we are sad to have her leave, we are excited about her being selected for a marketing position at Web MD. Although she’s living on the opposite side of the country, we know that Mary will remain connected to us through Net Impact and her hard work to establish the Philly Professionals Chapter will remain a strong foundation as it grows. With Mary’s departure, Karyn Kemmerer is now the Chapter Leader. Karyn got involved with Net Impact as an MBA student at the University of Maryland in 2003 where she was co-president of the school’s chapter. When Karyn moved to Philadelphia in November 2006, she immediately got involved in helping to launch the Philly Professionals Chapter and has taken an active role in helping to plan events and connect Net Impact with like-minded organizations on both a local and national level.

Karyn was introduced to Net Impact four years ago; however, her passion for corporate social responsibility has remained steadfast for nearly fifteen years. As a Communication Studies student at Westmont College, Karyn participated in an urban studies semester program in San Francisco where she was the community & government relations intern for KQED, Inc. She saw first hand how the choices businesses make have a significant effect on society, positive or negative. From this experience, Karyn’s passion was sparked to establish regular business practices that integrate good financial decisions with good social/environmental decisions.

Karyn’s career spans from philanthropy to nonprofit development and from corporate growth to frontline customer service. Her background includes event planning, project management, research analysis, program development, cause marketing, business consulting, and strategic philanthropy. She’s been honored to work at The Huntington Library, Art Collections & Botanical Gardens, Starbucks Coffee Company, Booz Allen Hamilton, Goodwill International, KLD Inc. (a socially responsible investment research company), iRainmakers LLC (a cause marketing firm) and the John Templeton Foundation.

Currently, Karyn manages Hook & Ladder Brewing Company’s donations program A Penny in Every PintTM. Hook & Ladder was established by a firefighter in 1999 and has supported injured firefighters and burn patients from the start. Through A Penny in Every PintTM, for every barrel of Hook & Ladder sold, $4 is donated to support a firefighter burn foundation and/or burn center – Hook & Ladder donates $2 and the distributor within each region matches with an additional $2. Local sales support local organizations and the money is directed toward immediate and relevant needs determined by the burn center and firefighters within each region.

Hook & Ladder not only has remarkable business practices, it has award winning beer that is served in over 300 establishments throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. It will soon be launched in Philadelphia, so keep a look out for its fire ax and red fire hydrant tap handles and enjoy a beer that not only tastes great but supports your local firefighters.

To see where Hook & Ladder is currently available or learn more about the company, visit www.hookandladderbeer.com

Besides great beer, some of Karyn’s favorite pleasures include a good cup of coffee, chocolate, traveling to new places, and her one-year old niece, Lexa. When not managing pints of pennies for Hook & Ladder or supporting the NI Philly Professionals Chapter, Karyn enjoys learning how to play the drums, reading good books, and spending time with friends.
