Mary RobinsonMary Robinson, Realizing Rights

Mary Robinson, the first woman President of Ireland (1990-1997) and more recently United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (1997-2002), has spent most of her life as a human rights advocate.  Born Mary Bourke in Ballina, County Mayo (1944), the daughter of two physicians, she was educated at the University of Dublin (Trinity College), King’s Inns Dublin and Harvard Law School to which she won a fellowship in 1967.

As an academic (Trinity College Law Faculty 1968-90), legislator (Senator 1969-89) and barrister (1967-90. She married in 1970 Nicholas Robinson, lawyer, conservationist, and an authority on eighteenth-century caricature. They have a daughter and two sons.

In 1988 Mary Robinson and her husband founded the Irish Centre for European Law at the Trinity College.  Ten years later she was elected Chancellor of the University.

Mel Young, President, Homeless World Cup

Mel Young

Mel Young, 54, is recognised as one of the world’s leading social entrepreneurs by the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship.

In 1993 he co-founded The Big Issue in Scotland, a weekly magazine sold by homeless people in the streets of Scotland now with a circulation of 40,000. With the success of The Big Issue in Scotland, he co-founded the International Network of Street Papers, a global network of over eighty street papers sold in every continent, of which he is Honorary President.  The combined annual circulation of these papers is over 30 million helping 100,000 homeless or long-term unemployed people throughout the world every year.

It was in Cape Town, at the end of the 2001 INSP conference, that Mel and Austrian born Harald Schmied attempted to invent an international language to enable homeless people to communicate with each other around the world.  When they realised one already existed – football – the Homeless World Cup was born.   The first tournament was held in Austria in 2003 with 18 teams attending from around the world rising to 48 nations at the Copenhagen 2007 Homeless World Cup.

The Homeless World Cup is creating a level of change never before seen by social inclusion initiatives. More than 94% of participants say that it has a positive impact on their lives and 77% make significant changes in their lives as a direct result of their involvement, such as coming off drugs and alcohol, moving into homes, jobs, education, becoming coaches and players. It has triggered and supports grassroot football projects in over 60 nations involving over 25,000 players who are homeless in training for Copenhagen 2007.

In June 2002, recognising the potential of Fairtrade as a successful tool to alleviate poverty, Mel founded New Consumer Magazine, the UK’s leading ethical lifestyle magazine, enabling consumers to use their purchasing power to change the world.

Mel is the author of GOAL: The Story of the Homeless World Cup, and in 2007 was awarded an honorary degree by St Margaret's University, Edinburgh.

ROBIN COSGROVE PRIZE FOR ETHICS IN FINANCE

The Robin Cosgrove Prize for Ethics in Finance awards prize money of USD $20,000 for creative and unpublished papers setting out innovative ideas to promote ethics in finance. By encouraging young professionals to examine their own attitudes and behaviour, the Robin Cosgrove Prize promotes sustainable ways for encouraging higher standards of ethics in all aspects of finance. The Prize reflects Robin's vision. He was a bright young investment banker who died at age 31. He believed passionately that a major barrier to economic development was the lack of ethical practice in banking and financial systems.

The second edition of the Robin Cosgrove Prize will be launched in June 2008. Young professionals, age 35 years or younger, can submit a paper, in English or in French, before the deadline of midnight, March 31, 2009 (CET). To learn more, visit www.robincosgroveprize.org
