Managing Your Team
Leadership Team:
The leadership team of the UNC Kenan-Flagler Net Impact Chapter is broken down into two tiers - the first tier consists of vice president (VP) positions and the second tier is made up of liaisons that are paired with each vice president. The VP positions are filled by second years and first years fill the liaison positions. Each VP and liaison pair work closely throughout the year on their given function (i.e. VP Greening, VP Events). The president of the chapter meets with each VP-Liaison pair once per module (every 7 weeks). In addition to the VPs and liaisons, there are larger committees under some positions

Elections:
The VPs are elected as first years in March by the chapter members. Each candidate writes a one-page position statement. Once elected, the leadership team hosts an evening retreat to discuss the goals for the year. The retreat generally takes a few hours and is a mix of business and fun! It's important to remember that everyone involved is volunteering their time so it should be productive, yet enjoyable. The retreat is an opportunity for the VPs to identify their goals for the coming year and set a timeline.

The liaison positions are filled by first year students and they work directly with the respective VP. In the fall of their second year, the VPs host a kick-off meeting for the first years to introduce them to the responsibilities associated with each liaison position, complete with a handout on the position. First years are allotted a two week time frame to decide which position they want to apply for and are encouraged to speak with the VP of that position during this period. Each candidate presents a one-page application for the position of interest. The VPs and president then meet to select the liaison for each position. It is suggested that first years only apply for one or two positions.

Team meetings:
Bi-weekly meetings are held with the entire Leadership Team. It is recommended to set a regular and ongoing date as early as possible so people can put it on their calendar (i.e. every other Tuesday from 5-6:30pm). Prior to each meeting, the chapter president sends a draft agenda (including times) 2 days in advance. The agenda generally consists of the following:
- Personal check-ins
- Reflection on recent activities
- Details on upcoming events
- 1-2 minute updates from each VP/Liaison team
- End with 5 minutes of feedback on pro’s & con’s of that day’s meeting
Some extra things to think about to make the meeting as productive as possible:
- Appoint a timekeeper and note-taker; rotate these responsibilities every meeting
- Bring creative snacks! (It gives everyone something to look forward to.)

Helpful Managing tips:
It's important to keep your team motivated. Encourage the leaders to set deadlines and provide friendly reminders when a deadline is approaching. Team updates at bi-weekly meetings put gentle peer pressure on the leaders to get their work done so as not to show up empty handed.
Providing recognition for good work is equally important. Be sure to thank the leader at the event they planned - a simple thank you goes a long way! In addition, send a quarterly email to each leader detailing their accomplishments. Another great way to recognize the hard work of a leader is by letting them be the public face of your chapter at the event they plan. People tend to exceed expectations when they are given the opportunity to own their task.
