Greening
Net Impact and Cornell University welcome you to the 2009 Net Impact Conference! Throughout the conference planning and implementation, we have sought to carry out the mission of Net Impact in a conscious and tangible way. With this "Green" Conference Guide and attendees’ engagement with sustainable practices at the conference, we hope to bring attention to components of our daily lives in which each of us can make our own efforts to increase sustainability in our communities, workplaces, and homes.
We have employed ways to reuse, recycle, and compost waste generated at the conference. Attendees’ participation in recycling and composting is critical to its success:
- Recycling bins are located throughout the Cornell University conference venue
- Signage with instructions for proper sorting of recycling are provided in conjunction with containers
- Compost bins are available near every meal venue
- Composted items will be reused within the Cornell and Ithaca communities
Reducing the amount of energy consumed and neutralizing consumption
- Terrapass has generously donated carbon credits to offset the conference’s carbon consumption, including energy usage during the conference and staff travel.
Reducing the collateral waste that is standard at most conferences
- Nametags are biodegradable and are made of biopoly or corn. Participants are asked to return the nametag holders for reuse at future events
- Conference participants have been encouraged to limit distribution of unnecessary collateral materials
Reducing paper usage in both the planning and implementation of the conference
- All registration and communications to attendees were completed via the website and email
- Post-conference panel notes, presentations, etc. will be posted online in the Conference Knowledge Bank to reduce the amount of paper handed out at the conference
When printing was necessary, the following green printing principles were followed
- The guidebook was printed on 100% recycled paper using soy-based ink
- Double-sided photocopying, streamlined document layouts, and minimal colored ink were emphasized
Food and Beverages
- Majority of the meals served at Cornell are prepared with organic and locally-sourced products
- All containers, cutlery, and dishes are either made from recycled-content paper or from biodegradable corn and potato starch or sugar cane fiber
- All leftover food will be donated to local food banks or soup kitchens
- All participants are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle to use at the conference
- Tap water will be served in large fixed containers throughout the Cornell University conference venues
