Suicide is a serious public health problem that causes immeasurable pain, suffering, and loss to individuals, families, and communities nationwide. The causes of suicide are complex and determined by multiple combinations of factors, such as mental illness, substance abuse, painful losses, exposure to violence, and social isolation. Suicide prevention efforts seek to:
Reduce factors that increase the risk for suicidal thoughts and behaviors and increase the factors that help strengthen, support, and protect individuals from suicide.

Our team set up a table event in our campus cafeteria to encourage students, staff, and faculty to take a pledge to seek help if they ever feel like they are considering suicide as an option or know of someone who maybe thinking of suicide. Pledges were posted to a board with their names to showcase their commitment. We gave out resources and pamphlets with toll free suicide prevention numbers and local agencies. We asked our college psychologist to be present in case anyone needed to talk to a license professional.
