The Bamenda Professional Chapter in Cameroon, Africa, recently joined a workshop in partnership with the United Nations Youth Association of Cameroon (UNYAC) in Fundong, Cameroon. This workshop took place in May as part of celebrating the international menstrual Hygiene Day on the theme: “Education about Menstruation changes everything”. The day was inspired by the international organization called Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH). As volunteers and young people passionate about creating a positive social impact on the lives of others, the volunteers from UNYAC decided to carry out this activity in this town because the rate of teenage pregnancy and HIV positive young people was very high. The event organized donations of sanitary pads and soap to women in the Bamenda prison.

Inspired by the Duke of Edinburgh International Awards, the chapter also used this project as an advocacy event to inspire young people to fight against drug abuse.

The United Nations Youth Association of Cameroon (UNYAC) Secretary General Eric Mbotiji, organized a small event on menstruation conversation and breaking the silence about menstruation. He spoke on menstrual hygiene management, goal setting, decision making, peer pressure and using their talents for social activism. He invited a biology teacher and a retired nurse to talk about menstrual hygiene, sex education and family planning.

“We are so thankful and grateful that your team approved our chapter. Thank you so much for providing us with a platform to inspire change and foster community development.” - Eric Mbotiji, Secretary General, United Nations Youth Association of Cameroon
