JANUARY MEETING TO PROVIDE LECTURE ON “WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORTATION?”

SAN FRANCISCO–Working to further engage PGS students with applied sustainability, Transport Presidio will be hosting a First Residency lecture on “What is Sustainable Transportation?” The event will be presented by PGS’s own Dr. Joseph Kott, professor of SUS7100: Sustainable Urban Development, Economics & Policy, and will conclude with an associated state legislative report.

Utilizing the Brundtland Commission's definition of sustainability (1987), sustainable transportation can be defined as, “...[transportation] that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Transport Presidio further defines sustainable transportation as, “transportation powered by a ‘sustainable’ – renewable – energy source, whose impact on the natural environment is nominal, compared to traditional energy.”

“Since transportation is the source of nearly 40% of California’s greenhouse gas emissions, understanding sustainable transportation is vital, not just for our management and public administration studies, but for the climate imperative facing us, and our ability to adapt to a changing world,” stated Greg Justice, Transport Presidio’s Co-Chair.

Concluding the lecture will be Joshua Stark of the Oakland-based non-profit, “TransForm.” In his role as State Policy Director, Stark will report outcomes of the state Legislature’s “Special Session on Transportation and Infrastructure,” having occurred last summer. Founded in 1997, TransForm serves to, “promote walkable communities with excellent transportation choices to connect people of all incomes to opportunity, keep California affordable and help solve our climate crisis.”

The lecture will occur in Room 100 E of the Alliant campus on Saturday, 23 January 2016, and will take place from 13:00-13:50. No registration or advance notice for attendance is required, and complementary snacks and refreshments will be provided.
