WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer oversees The Nature Conservancy’s Compliance Program and manages a small global team to ensure compliance with the organization’s code of conduct, policies, and procedures, and reviews and evaluates compliance issues/concerns within the organization. The Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer reports to the General Counsel and provides quarterly reports to the Audit Committee of the Board. 

Functioning as an independent and objective body that reviews and evaluates compliance issues/concerns within the organization, this position implements strategy to manage and monitor internal and external risks by improving the coordination, dissemination and communications of compliance information and identifying gaps in compliance. They not only ensure the Board of Directors, management and employees are in compliance with the rules and regulations of regulatory agencies and the organization’s code of conduct, and policies and procedures are being followed, but also help build a culture of compliance within the organization. 

They partner with other departments (Internal Audit, Finance, Legal, Risk, and Human Resources), as well as Senior Managers, to implement compliance programs across the organization and work directly with individual business units to implement procedures and monitoring programs.

The ideal candidate should have exceptional communication and collaboration skills and experience designing, organizing, and directing complex projects. They will provide a single point of leadership and guidance for the design and implementation of the organization’s comprehensive compliance program, including assisting business units in implementing legal and regulatory requirements and taking corrective action as necessary. They will maintain and periodically review and update TNC Policies and Procedures, Values and Code of Conduct to ensure continuing currency and relevance in providing guidance to management and employees and benchmark the organization’s programs to ensure best practices in critical areas. 

The Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer will be responsible for establishing training priorities, developing, and coordinating all related training programs, and allocating training resources efficiently. They will maintain working knowledge of relevant emerging changes in laws and regulations affecting the Conservancy’s operations globally.  They will also manage investigations of allegations of non-compliance, which includes management of the compliance Helpline and overseeing a reporting and accountability system ensuring compliance with identified violations and to prevent illegal, unethical, or improper conduct.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • Juris Doctorate or other graduate degree in compliance related field. 
  • 10 years relevant experience working on matters involving ethics, compliance and/or legal matters, and working with board of directors and senior-most management. 
  • Supervisory experience including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
  • Experience in exercising sound judgement and making decisions on moderate to complex ethical and compliance matters, demonstrating the utmost integrity. 
  • Effective communication with senior management and board members on challenging and intricate matters. 
  • Experience delivering presentations to senior management and/or board members. 
  • Written/verbal communication skills and strong organization and attention to detail. 
  • Experience developing, implementing, and managing diverse projects and implementing strategic program goals. 
  • Collaboration, communications, public speaking, and presentation skills. 
  • Work effectively in high-tension situations and maintains composure under pressure.  Diffuses high-tension situations comfortably. 
  • Willingness to travel up to 20% of time, sometimes to remote locations. 

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural experience preferred.  
  • Experience working in a diverse culture in a complex work environment. 
  • Experience working in a large multi-national organization. 
  • Experience designing and implementing training. 
  • Experience managing a budget.
