The Position & Key Priorities
Today, FTUSA is investing significant capital in its market expansion and consumer activation programs, aiming to create positive, lasting change for farmers and workers around the world. The Head of People is a newly-created leadership position that joins this exciting journey as the organization positions itself for its next phase of dramatic growth and impact. Reporting to the COO, the Head of People will work with closely with the founder/CEO and the rest of the senior leadership team to develop and implement the organizational, talent and HR strategies needed to support FTUSA’s ambitious plans to scale. The Head of People will develop innovative and comprehensive programs to support a dynamic workforce that has grown 40% to around 100 people in the last two years, including organizational and talent development, culture, performance management, retention strategies, recruitment, policy and compliance, and benefits administration. Because of the rapid growth of the organization, and its reliance on a mission-driven, millennial workforce, the development of performance management and career development programs is a top priority. Key Objectives of the Role :
- Design and implement organizational development strategies that reinforce our values and culture and enable greater effectiveness and scalability.
- Lead the on-going design and execution of staff onboarding, training and development programs to improve staff skills, leadership competencies, communication, and effectiveness.
- Participate actively in strategic and operational planning. Partner with the CEO, COO and senior leaders to develop optimal organizational structures that support growth and scale.
- Help build more effective cross-departmental collaboration and internal communications across the organization.
- Design and implement on-going improvements to talent management strategies and programs including recruitment, training and development, engagement, retention, and succession.
- Assess and determine future design of performance management programs, ensuring that job descriptions, performance standards, and performance evaluation instruments promote operational excellence and accountability.
- Lead internal and external recruiting strategies. Oversee full life cycle recruitment processes.
- Oversee effective use of tools and systems to collect, maintain, and analyze personnel data. Translate relevant employee data into insights which drive action plans at appropriate levels.
- Annually assess HR policies, procedures, and programs. Recommend, communicate, and oversee implementation of new legislation, internal process, and creative ideas.
- Oversee the organization’s compliance with all legislation pertaining to personnel matters. Maintain knowledge of industry trends, employment legislation, and cost efficient solutions.
- Collaborate with CFO to design and implement the organization's compensation and benefits strategy including bonus programs, using external and internal benchmarking and ROI analysis.
The Ideal Candidate
Fair Trade USA is seeking a seasoned, strategic organizational leader with hands-on experience in all facets of people and talent management functions. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in setting direction in all phases of the organizational and talent life cycle, including a proven track record building systems and culture to enable scalability. We seek a leader that can help us sustain and build upon our culture and core values at a time of rapid growth. Coming into a new role, s/he will need to be adept at quickly assessing the current state of the organization, defining priorities, setting expectations, and proposing a vision and implementation plan for organizational and talent development. This effort will need to address both immediate organizational needs as well as anticipated future business and talent needs.
The ideal candidate will not only understand the systems, tools, and processes supporting talent management, but will be a natural leader and expert when it comes to change management, communications, and leading through influence. Developing best-in-class organizational policies and programs will require a leader who is skilled at working with and through people and relationships to achieve organizational goals.
This position currently manages an HR team of 2 and works closely with the Finance and Administration teams.
Additional Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Passion for Fair Trade USA’s mission, vision, and values.
- Exceptional emotional intelligence, listening and communication skills, and team leadership capabilities. Outstanding interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Strong experience building culture at rapidly growing organizations, preferably in mission-driven organizations.
- A history of building effective initiatives for employee learning and development.
- Self-starter with lots of initiative and creativity.
- Deep understanding of how effective culture and employee growth initiatives work at both small and large companies.
- Ability to identify issues impeding team and individual growth and a sense for how to fix those problems.
- Demonstrated track record managing and scaling the human resource function and organizational development programs for a diverse, millennial workforce, working in a fast-growing, innovative and entrepreneurial environment.
- Previous experience overseeing, implementing and managing an HRIS system, capturing metrics and producing various employment reports and analysis.
- Unimpeachable integrity, self-confidence, a high level of energy, and a sense of humor.
Required Education and Experience:
- Master’s or Bachelor's degree in human resource administration or related field
- Twelve or more years' relevant experience
- SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) or SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) credential, or have the ability to obtain certification within 12 months of hire
