Description & Responsibilities

The Manager, Shareholder Engagement, plays a key role in Ceres’ work with institutional investors on sustainability issues. This position focuses on coordinating and engaging investors who are seeking to improve corporate practices on climate change, renewable energy, governance and other sustainability issues.  Many of the investors are part of the Ceres Investor Network on Climate Risk and Sustainability (INCRS).  Members include state treasurers, pension funds, foundations, socially responsible asset managers, and religious institutional investors, among others.  This is a full-time staff position that will report to the Director, Shareholder Engagement.

 

Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Advise and support investors and working groups who engage companies on issues related to the risks and opportunities of climate change and other sustainability issues;
  • Conduct research, draft memos, letters and other materials making the business case for investor and corporate leadership on climate change and related topics;
  • Benchmark corporate and investor progress on sustainability issues;
  • In coordination with colleagues, organize and facilitate multiple in-person and telephonic group meetings and briefings of investors throughout the year, as well as meeting follow-up;
  • Assist investors in briefing proxy advisory firms about climate-related shareholder resolutions;
  • Develop and manage the systems to publicly and privately track shareholder resolutions;
  • Partner with the Director in working with the Communications team to develop media messaging and communications materials, such as op-eds, reports, press releases and blogs;
  • Work with the Ceres Communications Team to draft content for the Investor Network website and portal;
  • Help to coordinate cross-organization management of Ceres staff who engage investors in certain campaigns; 
  • Oversee portions of Ceres’ Investor Portal content and assist colleagues and investors in using relevant portions the Portal;
  • Manage a small portfolio of relationships with Investor Network members using the relationship management systems, and support recruitment efforts of new members;
  • Support the Development Team with content on fundraising proposals, progress reports, and funder outreach; 
  • Provide support with hiring, training and supervising interns;
  • Conduct personal administrative activities;
  • Participate in Investor Team activities such as meetings, quarterly and annual program reviews, and annual planning meetings; 
  • Support planning and execution of biennial Investor Summit and annual Ceres Conference.
  • Organize special projects, as necessary.

 

Qualifications

  • Five years of work experience with progressive responsibilities in roles.  
  • Three to five years of direct experience working in corporate governance for institutional investors, religious institutions, labor movements, institutional investors, or publicly traded company, preferred.  
  • Sustainability expertise is desirable but not required. 
  • An understanding of institutional investors and financial markets.
  • Sound judgment, sensitivity to diverse constituencies, excellent interpersonal skills, strong initiative and motivation.
  • Strong writing and research skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Meeting facilitation and public speaking skills desirable.
  • Strong project management skills and attention to detail.
  • Successful record of organizing multiple projects and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Desire to work in a not-for-profit, advocacy-focused organization.
  • Interest in being part of a diverse workforce and willingness to support Ceres’ Commitment to Inclusion and Equity.
  • Willingness to travel as needed to accomplish duties noted above.  
  • Proficient with word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, and e-mail computer applications.
  • Interest and willingness to be trained on specific applications necessary for work: Salesforce, RingCentral, GoToWebinar, Bloomberg Terminal, etc.
