Our Story

Every college grad deserves a fair shot at a meaningful, upwardly mobile career. That’s the promise of higher education in America, but the payoff depends on who you know, not just what you learned.

COOP Careers closes the social capital gap by recruiting and investing deeply in diverse, low-income, and first-generation grads from the City University of New York, San Francisco State, and other urban public colleges.

Our flagship program is the Digital Apprenticeship. Peer cohorts of 16 motivated, underemployed grads meet nightly for 16 weeks (200 hours) to learn technical skills, build community, and jumpstart careers in digital marketing and data analytics. Each cohort is led by a team of four captains, “near-peer” COOP alumni who serve as coaches, mentors, and guides on top of busy day jobs at local ad agencies and tech companies. In parallel, COOP helps these same employers meet, interview, and hire more and more diverse candidates.

Since 2014, COOP has run 76 cohorts with over 1,000 alumni, on our way to 10,000 by 2023. Four-in-five alumni work full-time, earning an average of $45,000 after 12 months (3x pre-program average) and almost $70,000 after three years (2x peer baseline).

Our Workplace

COOP is an energetic, come-as-you-are, alumni-led organization. Over 70% of our staff members have been program participants. This translates to a workplace that is mission-driven through and through, where we collaborate in the spirit of servant leadership with equal parts head, heart and hustle. We are a team of 19 in the Bay Area and NYC. We come together for monthly lunch & learns and semi-annual retreats and earnestly create space for professional development and learning. We dig into strategy, equity, our own humanity and the intersections among it all, working with purpose to overcome underemployment, and bringing optimism and fun to the challenge.

The Opportunity

COOP Careers is seeking a dynamic leader, experienced people manager, and entrepreneurial business development professional to lead its partnership strategy. In 2019, COOP will serve 300 recent grads in New York and almost 200 in California, along with 700 alumni across both regions. The Senior Director of Corporate Partnerships (DCP) will design and execute on a strategy for expanding COOP’s revenue base to serve an additional 1000 grads, deepening our existing relationships and growing to a third market in 2020.

In collaboration with senior leadership and with the support of the Partnerships team, the Director will assess COOP’s existing partnerships and identify areas that are ripe for growth and innovation. The DCP will steward COOP’s existing portfolio of national partnerships, as well as codify and evolve the corporate partnership model to secure new partnerships, reflective of COOP’s growing national presence.

The ideal candidate will bring experience in partnership outreach and management, and will be forward-thinking, analytical, highly collaborative, and have a proven track record of establishing buy-in across diverse groups of individuals and networks. Working closely with Program staff, the Senior Director of Corporate Partnerships will play a critical role in ensuring that COOP participants gain access to career opportunities and inclusive workplaces, dedicated to building a movement of diverse, upwardly mobile college grads overcoming underemployment through digital skills and peer connections.

Responsibilities

National Leadership & Strategy - 30%
Collaborate closely with the CEO and COO for all organizational objectives and initiatives related to national and local partnerships
Develop the annual partnership strategy, key performance indicators, and evaluation model
Spearhead a revenue-generating corporate engagement model, including but not limited to how we articulate COOP’s value proposition to corporations, partnership benefits at various levels, and more. Ensure that the new model is compelling in each region and leads to an increase in overall corporate support of COOP
Partner with Director of Development on national revenue generation and how these initiatives coalesce with COOP's overall fundraising targets
Oversee regional/national collaboration on new and existing partnerships; provide leadership on stewardship strategies, and identify opportunities to parlay regional traction into larger opportunities that benefit the organization at large
Travel to current and future regions, up to 1 week/month

Partnership Development & Management - 50%
Lead the pursuit and management of new opportunities and revenue for COOP from the research phase all the way through successfully pitching and closing
Serve as primary relationship manager on 4-5 high priority, strategic partnerships that are strongly aligned with COOP’s mission and strategic plan
Display cultural attunement in prospecting and cultivating new partners with an aptitude and knowledge to guide stakeholders toward building diverse, equitable and inclusive employment opportunities
Partner with Senior Director of Program to develop industry-responsive programming and curriculum
Serve as Partnerships liaison within the organization, connecting regularly with national and regional teams to represent the best interests of partners and to integrate learnings from partner sites to help continually improve program impact
Serve as an ambassador of the dynamic work of COOP with various functional areas in NYC and CA regions, and in future markets
Participate in at least 2-3 COOP programmatic events monthly

People Management - 20%
Lead and grow regional partnerships team, engaging in their recruitment, hiring, on-boarding, training, management, and professional development
Ensure that partnership managers are effectively providing quality support to grow and retain partners in their portfolio. Utilize data analysis to develop strategies, implementing training and coaching to maximize impact and help create a supportive and reflective culture

Qualifications

7+ years of professional experience with significant experience in partnerships or business development, employer development, corporate social responsibility, and/or client-facing positions
At least 3 years of staff management experience with a focus on leadership development and performance management
Experience pitching and cultivating partnerships with the ability to create buy-in to work toward programmatic outcomes; exceptional customer service orientation in working with partners
Strong quantitative analytical skills with the ability to use data, identify patterns and performance metrics to create targeted strategies and management support
Superior networking, business-to-business relationship development, and interpersonal skills.
Excellent communicator at a variety of levels; exceptional presentation skills and the ability to manage by influence and coach across wide range of audiences
Entrepreneurial, resourceful and persistent with demonstrated success managing shifting priorities
Deep commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion and aligned in thought and action with COOP’s values; strong alignment with cOOP’s mission and vision
Bachelor’s degree required
