THE BES FELLOWSHIP

Through the BES Fellowship, highly motivated leaders who are committed to transforming education in their communities participate in rigorous, multi-year training that prepares them to design, found, and lead a high-performing charter school.

WHO WE ARE

Strong schools rest on the shoulders of strong leaders. That’s why BES identifies and prepares excellent leaders to transform education in their communities.

From school founders and executive directors, to operations leaders, deans of students, and directors of curriculum and instruction, we train leaders to build schools, to ensure their schools excel, and to sustain their results over time.

Over more than two decades, BES has prepared leaders to found 185+ independent schools in 46 cities across 21 states and Washington, DC, educating 58,000+ students each year – of whom 77 percent qualify for free/reduced lunch, and 90 percent identify as students of color. In all, BES has trained more than 2,500 leaders to found, lead, and grow schools through its leadership development offerings.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

We invest in leaders so that they can invest in their teams and students, delivering on the promise of an excellent education for every child.

What sets BES apart is our focus on entrepreneurial leadership. BES training equips school leaders with the skills they need to effectively manage instruction, operations, student and adult culture, and external relationships in a high-achieving school. BES-trained leaders hold themselves and their teams accountable for results. They are visionaries who also sweat the details. And they lead schools that reflect and respond to the needs of their communities.

HOW YOU CAN BUILD A HIGH-PERFORMING SCHOOL: THE PROCESS

The Training Year

Fellows participate in 75+ training days, study 40+ exemplar schools nationwide, complete two month-long residencies at high-performing charter schools, write and submit their charter application, and build a founding board. Upon completion of the training year, Fellows partner with a dedicated BES coach, who works closely with leaders in years 2-4. This coaching program, called Follow On Support, ensures that schools start strong and stay strong.
