Feeding the Homeless: There's an App for That

Feeding the Homeless: There's an App for That

“For me the most rewarding part has been just seeing the quality of food we are able to provide to the shelter system. I'm also grateful for all the incredible people we've been able to meet along the way, from our partner organizations to volunteers to people who rely on the shelters we work with.” --Samir Goel, from Transfernation

Calling themselves the "Uber of Food Rescue", Transfernation founders Samir Goel and Hannah Dehradunwala have made it their mission to take corporate leftovers and get them to hungry mouths. Through its app, the nonprofit has streamlined the process so that organizers of events, such as corporate luncheons, galas and conferences, can send out push notifications to Transfernation volunteers, who then take charge of getting the surplus where it needs to go. To date, the NYC-based team has rescued 12,500 pounds of food before it's gone to the dumpster. As the group says on its website: "We already have everything we need to end hunger in America. Redistribute. Repurpose. Restore. This is what Transfernation aims to do."
